This is a letter of reference for Jane who is applying for the position of an activities supervisor at the children’s sports camp.

I met Jane 10 years ago in middle school. She gave me a good first impression by talking to me first with her sense of humor in a friendly way so that we got close soon and become the best friends since then. She was our class president and the leader of a volunteer club, and succeeded in leading the groups with her charismatic leadership and great abilities to entertain people. She also has a younger brother and a sister so she is accustomed to dealing with children without any trouble.

She is excellent at almost all kinds of sports, especially swimming, cycling, and volleyball, and has been in school team as a volleyball player for 3 years. In addition, she regularly participates in marathons and won the Boston Marathon last year. She also goes running every morning, so needless to say, she is extremely fit.

She has been studying Physical education at university and wants to become a sports teacher in the future. Therefore, this job would be very useful for her. Moreover, all these skills and interests she has would be helpful in making the sports camp more fun and better.

All in all, she would be the most suitable person for the position and I am really pleased to recommend Jane to you.

Firstly, I would like to say thank you all for coming tonight to celebrate my boyfriend Tom's 30th birthday, hope you are all having a good time.

It is hard to believe that time has flown so fast like an arrow since I celebrated his 29th birthday together. Since then, a year has already passed and today is his birthday again so I would like to raise my glass and propose a toast for who he truly is:

Tom he is a man who looks at life positively in spite of the struggles and obstacles he faces, who strongly believes in true love and practices what he believes, and who always follows his dream.

Let me begin by saying I am simply speechless now and this is just amazing! I am overwhelmed with this honor. Thank you, thank you and thank you.

Ever since I started the business school here, to win the ABC Business Plan Competition has been always my biggest dream as it is a well-known prize among business students. That is why I cannot believe that I am awarded. I think the idea-market website, the topic that I dealt with, was original and interesting and that made me stand up here in the first place. Otherwise, I do not think I can get this prize since I know I am no better than others and all competitors did absolutely fantastic job.

I remember that all the professors I visited to ask for a piece of advice said my idea about the idea-market website was impossible to realize in the real business world. That night, I cried a lot and almost gave up carrying out the project. Then I got an answer from Prof. Kim the following day and he said it would be perfect if I modified some parts of my project. He was the only person who saw the possibility of my project for this competition and led me to develop my idea more logically and realistically. Without his support, I would not have been able to do this.

Thank Prof. Kim for giving me such useful and helpful advice all the time and helped me to apply possible real business models to this project. Also, thank my family who always encouraged me to think of a better idea in a creative way and all of my friends who stood by me especially during tough time and thank you for recognizing my project with this reward. And I would like to say thank you to all people here. Thank you again.

It is said that knowing our history is so important that we should make more efforts to preserve our past. But is it really necessary to do so?

On the one hand, there are some people who insist that we have already spent enough money and would rather invest in more practical fields such as education or medical services. Supposing we had developed new technology with the money, we would have improved our lives more. Or it may have been better to give away that money to charities since we can immediately see how wisely the money is spent. Moreover, we have not got any useful result from preserving out past, although a great deal of money and time were used. We are living in the present and going to the future, not the past. That is why they say it is a complete waste.

On the other hand, it is widely thought that the past reflects us who are living in the present and shows the future as history has repeated all the time. For this reason, if we are aware of our past well, we can get a better understanding of the way we live and think, and prepare for what will happen in the future in order not to make mistakes again which caused problems before. Furthermore, our past is not only ours, but also our future generation’s. Just because it does not seem important for us at this moment does not mean that they will not need to know about the past. It would be a vital resource for them.

It seems to me that it is absolutely necessary for us to preserve our past, because there are more things in life than simply being practical. Therefore, I agree with the statement that we should spend more money on preserving our past – it is too important to lose.

Are you happy? It's quite a difficult question to answer straightaway in deed. How about this one?: 'Do you think you would be happy if you were the richest, the most good-looking, and the most popular person in the world?' According to an article I read, money, beauty, and popularity have little to do with happiness which you wouldn't expect.

However, there are some things happy people tend to have in common. Those things are not 'wealth' to allow them to buy whatever they want, 'appearances' to attract people, nor 'fame' to make others look up to them. In fact, happy people consider an expression of their appreciation and positive outlook as the crucial keys to their happiness, which means it's not from the outside, but from the inside.

Unfortunately, not everyone appreciates what they possess and sees things around them in a positive way as happy people do. Then, how can we be happy if we're not that sort of person? It's said that the way we think and act can change when we make an effort.

It's hardly surprising that our parents tend to consider computer games as a complete waste of time and money. However, I would say this is a very narrow view. Everything has pros and cons, and the computer games are no exception. We need to see what are good things about computer games as well!

Firstly, it's fun to play computer games.
We are not slaves to study or work all the time, and there's no denying that it's necessary to enjoy ourselves. Computer games can be a means for us to have a good time. In other words, we can relieve our stress which is from study and work by playing interesting games. 

Secondly, computer games improve our abilities to understand abstract things better.
According to an article I read a few days ago, people nowadays are more capable of comprehending notions than our ancestors were. Playing computer games increases the size of specific parts of our brain, and it makes us smarter in terms of perceiving something abstract.

Thirdly, computer games can be used as great study materials.
For instance, I learned how to calculate quickly by playing a calculating games at school. All my classmates were excellent at mental arithmetic thanks to the game. it's also possible to use games so as to learn history, a language, or any other subject in an enjoyable way.

Computer games can be useful and helpful, depending on how we deal with them. That's why I disagree with the statement that computer games are a complete waste of time and money.

Can you imagine that there's no friend around you to talk with about your happiness and sadness? You must feel very lonely! We all need good friends.

Then, how can we make friends? Is there any answer?
Yes, the answer is actually very simple. If you want to be someone's friend, be their friend first! I mean you can talk to them first and find out what both of you have the same interest in. Then, you'll see that you're already been their friend.

As a student, what would you like to know the most? It may well be how to learn best. That's why I'm going to tell you the secret, the best way to study.

I find I can remember things well if I've experienced them myself. Not only experiencing, but revising is also necessary to remember things longer.

For example, if you want to brush up on your English, what should you do? If I were in the situation, I'd have a chat with English speakers and email my friends in English. Experience 'English' by speaking and writing in an enjoyable way! It's my favorite way to study, because that's more practical and fun.

Why am I learning English?

English was the worst subject ever in my life. I just started to study it for an exam in highschool.
Nevetheless, now I'm learing English for fun. Learing English itself is one of the most interesting things to me.

As I studied it, I found thousands of advantages of speaking English fluently.
I can communicate with people from diverse cultures if I speak English and it's much more fun than I had expected. Moreover, I can have more job opportunities if I'm good at English.
Hm... frankly, I don't know why I'm learning it now although I know many good reasons.

I'm just doing it for fun.
Or perhaps all of those reasons make me want to learn it.

DEMI PAIR PRGRAMME



A Demi Pair student will stay with a host family free of charge for a minimum of 3 months (non-EU students 6 months)and will attend a General English course of 20 hours per week each morning Monday to Friday.


THE FAMILY

The host family will provide full board accommodation for the student. In addition the family will give the student a monthly bus and rail ticket or €100 pocketmoney per month, whichever the student prefers. It is expected that the student will live as part of the family and be treated as a full familymember. The family will collect the student on their arrival to Cork Airport. The family will have regular contact with Cork English College in relation to the progressof the Demi Pair student. It is important to remember that this student is not a cleaner for the household but is intended as a help regarding the children and general house care.


THE STUDENT

The student will make their own arrangements with Cork English College in relation to the payment of course fees. The student will also book and pay for travel to and from Ireland and will inform both Cork English College and the family of the flight number and arrival time. The student will complete up to 18 hours of light house work and/or babysitting each week, this work rota is to be agreed each weekend between the host family and the student. On the nights when the student is free theymay babysit for other families to earn extra pocket money, again this can be discussed and agreed with the family. The Demi Pair student should adapt to living in an Irish family and do their best to fit in with the normal family routines. The student should liaise with Cork English College on a regular basis and discuss their progress and life with their Irish family.


CORK ENGLISH COLLEGE

The school will take an active role in ensuring the students well being during his/her stay. Our Host Family Officer, Denise, is responsible for the day to day running of our Demi Pair Programme. She knows all of our host families personally and regularly meets with the Demi Pair students to ensure that the programme meets with their expectations.

A. This is a young adult who typically comes from outside of Europe and has different visa requirements. A Demi Pair lives with the family, receives full board accommodation. First, drinking the corn tea helps heavy metals in our body to be removed. According to Professor Kim Heegap in Kangwon University, the ingredients of the corn tea are effective enough to get rid of heavy metals in our body such as lead and arsenic which can cause many health problems. 명사적 용법

  - I like to watch TV with my mother at night.

형용사적 용법: 명사 to 동사 (-할)
  - I have no money to spend and no one to go out with.

부사적 용법 (-하기 위해서)
  - 부사 to 동사: I studied hard to pass the exam.
  - 명사 to 동사: I studied English to get a job.

4. 결과적 용법 (-해서)

- enjoy, avoid, mind, suggest, consider, finish, admit, postpone, deny, quit..etc.

*동명사도 원래는 동사였기 때문에 그 동작을 하는 주체가 필요. 동명사의 의미상의 주어라고 해서 "소유격"의 형태로 씀.

예문)
- The rain prevented our starting. (비가 와서 우리는 출발하지 못했다.)
- I’m sure of his passing the exam. (나는 그가 시험에 합격하리라 확신한다.)


* 의미상주어가 일반인이라 생략되는 경우.

예문)
- Fishing in this lake is forbidden.(호수에서 낚시하는 것은 금지되어있다)

3.사역동사 (Causative Verb)

have(부탁), make(강제), let(허락)

- Active: I had John fix the car. (나는 존이 그 차를 수리하도록 했다.)
- Passive: I had the car fixed by John. (나는 그 차가 존에 의해서 수리되도록 했다.)

예문)
- The corn tea makes your face clean.(그 옥수수 차는 당신의 얼굴을 깨끗하게 해준다.)

force, compel, urge, allow, permit, want

- He wanted her to study harder. (그는 그녀에게 더 열심히 공부할 것을 원했다.)
- I got him to fix the chair. (내가 그에게 그 의자를 고치라고 시켰다.)

사역동사건 준사역동사건 목적어와 목적보어 관계가 수동일 때는 목적보어로 과거분사를 쓴다.

1. 한달 안에 10권의 책을 읽는 것은 가능합니다.
It is possible to read 10 books in a month.

2. 전 그녀가 그 책을 훔쳤다는 말을 듣고 충격 받았어요.
I am shocked to hear that she stole the book.

Should teachers teach culture in an ESL class?

1. What is culture?

"Culture" is a broad concept that embraces all aspects of human life. It includes everything people learn to do. It is everything humans have learned. Culture shapes our thoughts and actions, and often does so with a heavy hand" (Seelye 1984-1993).



2. Should we teach culture in an ESL class? If yes, why? If no, why?

Yes, teacher should teach culture in an ESL class.

According to the US senator, Paul Simon, "Knowledge of the world's languages and cultures is more vital than ever. In order to compete in the global community, we must be able to communicate effectively and to appreciate, understand, and be able to work in the framework of other cultures." In the past, culture used to be distinct from language; nowadays, it has become integral to it. If it is important to teach a foreign language to enhance communication, it is also vital to instill in students an intellectual and emotional appreciation of the culture of that foreign language, so that communication will not be impaired. (Paul Simon, US senator)
Learning a language in isolation of its cultural roots prevents one from becoming socialized into its contextual use. Knowledge of linguistic structure alone does not carry with it any special insight into the political, social, religious, or economic system. Or even insight into when you should talk and when you should not. (Seelye 1993, p 10).
"The study of language cannot be divorced from the study of culture, and vice-versa (Seelye p. 22).
"A language is part of a culture and culture is part of language; the two are intricately interwoven so that one cannot separate the two without losing the significance of either language or culture." (Douglas-Brown 1994)



3. As English is an international language, what culture should we teach?

The main Themes of the culture might be: symbolism, value, authority, order, ceremony, love, honor, humor, beauty, and spirit, in addition to intellectuality, individualism, the art of living, realism, common sense, friendship, family, justice, liberty, patriotism, religion, education, conflict, ecology … "Theme" in teaching culture is not just any "topic"; rather it is an "emotionally charged concern, which motivates or strongly influences the culture bearer’s conduct in a wide variety of situations."

Brooks identified ten points around which culture could be based:
1) Symbolism
2) Value
3) Authority
4) Order
5) Ceremony
6) Love
7) Honor
8) Humor
9) Beauty
10) Spirit
He suggested teaching different points at different times.

"There is... a tendency for us to believe that our own reality is the “correct” perception......What appears to you to be an accurate and objective perception of a person, a custom, an idea, is sometimes “jaded” or “stilted” in the view of someone from another culture." (Douglas-Brown 1994)
